After contracting a virus, Helen Freeman's muscles degenerated, leaving her disabled. She began to play Wheelchair Basketball when she was just 12 years old. Helen was a key member of the GB Juniors before progressing to the senior team.

In 2007, Helen's team achieved a Bronze at the European Championships in the Netherlands, a Bronze in the FSB European Championships in 2009 and a Bronze in the 2011 European Championships in Israel. They also finished sixth at the 2010 World Championships, their highest ranking for several years.

At the age of 18, Helen was the youngest athlete to be selected for the Women's Wheelchair Basketball team at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. The team came eighth.

Helen is an integral part of the Women's Wheelchair Basketball team, and is frequently the top scorer. At the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the team got to the quarter-finals, finishing seventh overall. At Rio 2016 the team improved their ranking again, finishing fourth and just missing out on a space on the podium.

Although Helen is originally from Watford, she is studied at the University of Illinois in the USA, and used to train there between September and April. Her team at university included members of the USA Wheelchair Basketball squad, so she played with many of the opponents she faces when representing Great Britain! She graduated with a degree in Kinesiology in May 2014 with High Honors and then went on to completed a Master of Science degree in Business Administration the following year, graduating in August 2015. She was an Athletic All-American all five years as well as an Academic All-American for three years.
