We were a last minute entry into this tournament, which meant that the team only had chance to practise for a week. Fortunately, with Coach Norgate in charge and the team’s natural talent, this was not a problem!
Our first match was against Meltham Moor’s 1st team. They were a strong team who went into the lead fairly early on. However, our pocket rocket Athena soon found her shooting skills and evened things up. By half time, we were losing 2-1, but following the passionate team talk from Coach Norgate, we came back stronger in the second half. With countless shots on goal, the ball eventually rolled into the net from Georgia’s great shot. The game finished 3-2 to Meltham Moor, but our team work was phenomenal and our heads were held high.
Next we played Meltham C of E’s 2nd team. We started strongly and had numerous shots on goal. Our hard work was rewarded with quick thinking Kiera scoring 2 and Georgia scoring 1. Our defence worked equally as hard to keep a clean sheet. Millie in particular found her defensive hands and stopped many a pass and Brooke ran himself ragged to intercept. After a halftime change of positions (part of the rules for High 5 is that the players change position each half), we continued to demonstrate fantastic team work and scored straight away from Georgia’s accurate shot. Meltham Moor scored a come back shot, but Brooke ended an amazing game by scoring. Final score 5-1 to Helme.
Our third match against Meltham Moor’s 2nd team, saw us finish on top again. The final score was 4-1 to Helme, thanks to 2 goals each for Kiera and Daisy – a fantastic shooting partnership.
The final match was our toughest of the tournament, against Meltham C of E’s 1st team. Following a break before this match, it took us a little time to get ourselves going and before we knew it, Meltham C of E scored 2 goals. After another inspiring half time talk from Coach Norgate (and our parent supporters!) we came back well with both Brooke and Georgia having shots on goal. The game finished 8-0 to Meltham C of E. However, this is an experienced team who train all year round – we can still be proud of ourselves.
The teamwork displayed by our Helme superstars was phenomenal. The skill and confidence on show was a credit to us. Praise is also deserved for listening skills as the team responded to every coaching point made by Coach Norgate. With just one week of training, we managed to finish the tournament in SECOND place – talk about a small school feeling big!
Thanks as always to our supporters, the noisiest by far – in a positive way of course! Thanks too to Coach Norgate our Netball Professional. Here’s to more Netball success in the future!
