Reflecting on Team GB's record breaking performance at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival, Chef de Mission Mark England said:

This has been an unforgettable five days for Team GB's young athletes. Winning 66 medals is a truly remarkable accomplishment and one that the whole of Team GB can be extremely proud of. They have coped very well with the challenging conditions and extreme temperatures to produce record breaking results.

Particularly pleasing is the fact that all eleven sports have contributed to the Team GB medal tally. Team GB's traditional strength in the likes of rowing, gymnastics, hockey and triathlon was once again evident, and it was absolutely fantastic to see so many British athletes from badminton, basketball, diving, shooting, weightlifting and wrestling also on the podium. These sports grabbed the opportunity with both hands to display the great breadth of potential that is being developed across the British Olympic sporting spectrum. A special mention goes to the golfers and in particular our Opening Ceremony Flag Bearer Georgia Hall, who created history by winning the first golf gold medals in an Olympic event for over a hundred years.

In total 93 out of 114 competing Team GB athletes are going home with a medal around their necks and this is a tribute to not only their talent and determination, but also to the dedication, commitment and skill of the coaches and support staff behind them at their National Governing Bodies who continue to develop and nurture these fine young athletes day in, day out.

Every member of Team GB has conducted themselves with dignity, respect and focus here in Sydney, both on and off the field of play. Crucially, the AYOF has provided an important learning curve for all involved with the Team GB delegation as they have gained exposure to many elements reminiscent of an Olympic Games, including living in an athletes village, being part of One Team GB and competing against athletes from different nations, cultures and alongside other sports.

I have no doubt that the experience gained at the AYOF will help them greatly on their journey towards pursuing a place on Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and as they make the transition to senior international sportsmen and women, some of them in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games on home soil in Glasgow.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Australian Olympic Committee and applaud the organising committee for once again staging an excellent Festival of youth Olympic sport. We look forward to returning again in four years time. I would like to thank my colleagues at the British Olympic Association for the excellent service and support they have delivered to the athletes and sports of Team GB.

With the inspiration provided by the awesome exploits of Team GB's senior athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games still fresh in their memories, it was a joy to watch the next generation of British Olympians grow, develop and succeed at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

Highlights of a memorable final day for Team GB were:

  • After 'Super Saturday' it was 'Sensational Sunday' for Team GB at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney as the next generation of British Olympians won a record breaking 40 medals in a single day.
  • Team GB's young athletes signed off the final day of the sixth edition of the AYOF with 13 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals, bringing Great Britain's overall total to a final tally of 66 medals, comprising a superb 19 gold, 23 silver, 24 bronze medals.
  • Team GB won medals in all 11 sports in which they competed: badminton, basketball, diving, golf, gymnastics, hockey, rowing, shooting, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
  • Of the 114 athletes who competed for Team GB at the AYOF, 93 will return from the heat of Sydney to the snow in London with a medal hanging around the neck.
  • The history making continued for Team GB on the Twin Creeks golf course where Flag Bearer Georgia Hall became Team GB's first gold medallist in an Olympic golf event for over a hundred years when she won both the individual women's competition and team gold.
  • The men's and women's artistic gymnasts won an incredible 23 medals on the final day of individual apparatus and all around competition. The men won 15 medals including 5 gold, the women won 8 medals including 4 gold.
  • Over at the Syndey International Regatta Centre Team GB rowers enjoyed more success on the final day of AYOF regatta winning another six medals - one gold, two silvers and three bronze medals.
  • All three of Team GB's wrestler's won medals - two silver and one bronze, while diving claimed another two medals.
  • Men's hockey had to settle for silver after losing a thrilling final to Australia 5-4. The women beat USA 2-1 with a golden goal in extra time to win bronze.
  • It has certainly been another memorable Olympic event for the British Olympic team.
