FAQs

What is Get Set for Positive Energy?

Get Set for Positive Energy, brought to you by Team GB, ParalympicsGB and British Gas, is a cross-curricular learning opportunity to empower young people and their communities to understand the role we can all play in saving energy and creating a greener future.

What is the Design a Sustainable Schools Competition?

The Design a Sustainable Schools Competition challenges young people aged 5-11 to imagine what a sustainable school of the future could look like. The competition encourages pupils to use their knowledge of renewal energy and their imaginations to create their ideal future school.

Who can enter?

The Design a Sustainable School competition is open to all schools, or equivalent education organisations, educating children aged 5-11, in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Isle of Man, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories.

What do pupils need to do?

Pupils need to design a sustainable school of the future. All designs must be submitted on entry sheets and the young person’s name and age must be written in the space provided, alongside the name and an email address for an adult contact. If use of the entry sheet is not possible, ensure that the entrant’s information is visible in the email.

Check out the competition pack and learning resources available above for more information.

How many times can I enter?

There is no limit to the number of entries a school or parent can make, but you can only submit one entry per child.

How do I submit an entry to the competition?

To enter the competition, a teacher, teaching assistant, school staff member, or parent/guardian/carer must either:

  • email the drawing(s), video, photos or photos of the models of their Sustainable School design to the Get Set inbox (getset@getset.co.uk).
  • post the drawing(s), video link details, photos or photos of the models of their Sustainable School design to

How is the competition judged?

The judges will be made up of an independent panel of judges across Team GB, ParalympicsGB and British Gas. They will be reviewing entries against the following criteria:

  • Is it creative and exciting? – does the entry showcase an innovative design?
  • Is it sustainable? – does the entry highlight sustainable initiatives?
  • Is it inspiring? – does the entry inspire people about our sustainable future?
  • Is it accessible? – does the design provide a school for everyone?
  • Pupils may also be inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Values of excellence, respect, friendship, determination, equality, inspiration, and courage.

Submissions do not need to be actionable or be confined to a current/expected school design – the judges are looking for young people to think outside the box and innovate a green future!

When does the Design a Sustainable school competition open and close?

The Design a Sustainable School competition opened at 00:01 on 15th January 2024 and closes at 23:59 on 3rd May 2024.

What is the prize?

The winning entrant will win a £15,000 British Gas Positive Energy Grant for their school.

There will be 4 x runner ups who will receive a £2,500 British Gas Positive Energy Grant.

The grant is fully funded by British Gas and will support schools to create a greener more accesible school for everyone. Winning schools will receive expert advice from British Gas on how to make their school more energy efficient, as well of advice from Paralympics GB on how to make it more accessible to everyone.
