ACTIVITY IDEA

There are two active challenges in this pack. One is aimed at younger pupils where they will use the pledge card and set themselves a goal and monitor their progress.

Older students will take part in a series of mini active challenges to achieve a personal best or compete against their classmates. Younger pupils can do this but they will need to be supervised by an adult.

Challenge outcomes (Primary)

  • Decide on a physical activity challenge and set a personal goal.
  • Practise and improve technique.

Teacher notes

The Getting active challenge enables pupils to choose a simple physical activity or skill. Pupils will set a goal and work towards this by practising. Pupils can update their goal if they achieve it easily, to challenge themselves further. Using the physical activity challenge goal setting card, pupils can track their improvement as they go. Physical activity skills such as hula-hooping, skipping or keepy-uppies are always popular skills to try.

Support: Reduce the length of time for the challenge.
Challenge: Increase pupils’ goals each time they achieve it. Set a timer where pupils try to improve their skill against the clock.

Challenge outcomes (Secondary)

  • Work as part of a team and participate in a variety of athletic-type activities.
  • Improve performance through perseverance.
  • Compete against other teams using a competition ladder format.

Teacher notes

For older students, the challenge provides an opportunity for students to work as a team to achieve their personal best at up to 3 key skills: jumping for height, for distance, and throwing for distance. The setup guide details these activities for the students to attempt. Activities can be facilitated by young leaders aged 14+ during break or lunchtime. Teams can participate as often as the school is able to accommodate.

Support: Use a shorter distance for the jumping activity. Change the throwing object to increase the distance achieved.
Challenge: Change the jumping for distance activity to a set distance to see which team can jump across using the fewest jumps.
