Destination Challenge: Dakar!

Wow! You are in Dakar in Senegal. You have covered 5008 km to reach a new continent!

To help you persevere, listen to an inspirational message from an athlete and take part in an exciting activity challenge. Remember to log your activity to help you to get to Paris and discover even more interesting facts about the Olympic and Paralympic Games!

This challenge is brought to you by Archery GB

Did you know?

Dakar will host the Youth Olympic Games in 2026. It will be the first African country to host an Olympic or Paralympic event. Many Team GB athletes, such as gymnasts Becky Downie and Sam Oldham, gained experience at a Youth Games before becoming Olympians.

A message from… Abi Burton

Abi is a rugby 7s player for Team GB. Before playing rugby, she was a swimmer. Listen to Abi’s message to hear about the different ways that athletes like to keep active, even when they are not taking part in their main sport.

Challenge yourself: Play Hit the Gold

Archery is both an Olympic and a Paralympic sport. It is one of the oldest sports in the world. Archery is about accuracy so, even if you do not have a bow, you can play it too! To be a successful archer, you need to control your body and an object. Play Hit the Gold to practise your control and accuracy.

Time needed: 5 minutes

 Get ready:

  • Chalk or large piece of paper (stick 4 A4 sheets together to make a square) and pen.
  • Throwing object, e.g., ball, bean bag, paper ball, rolled-up socks, empty plastic bottle.
  • Timer, e.g., watch, phone, counting.

Play:

  • Draw a cross on the wall (paper) then draw 3 concentric circles around it. This is your target.
  • The cross is 10 points, inner circle 7 points, middle circle 5 points, outer circle 3 points.
  • Face the wall, throw the object at the target, see how many points you score.
  • Run and collect the object. Throw again. Add your points together.
  • Keep playing for 60 seconds, adding your points each time.
  • How many points can you score in the time?
  • Play again to see if you can increase your score.

Change the game:

  • Stand closer to or further from the target when you throw.
  • Increase or decrease the time limit, e.g., 30 seconds, 90 seconds.
  • Make the target bigger or smaller or place it on the floor, not the wall.
